We’re pleased to announce that Pain Physicians of Wisconsin is now Pro Spine & Pain.
PNS is a type of neuromodulation that places a small electrode near a specific nerve responsible for transmitting pain signals to the brain. It is performed with a minimally invasive procedure that results in precise, focused pain relief and improved function and mobility.
Peripheral nerve stimulation is a two-stage process, consisting of a trial phase and a permanent implant. The trial phase helps you evaluate the pain relief you are experiencing with PNS before one of our doctors performs the permanent implantation.
The trial phase of a peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) device is a short-term test period to determine whether the therapy provides meaningful pain relief before committing to a permanent implant. It is necessary because all patients have different conditions and different levels of pain. The trial period is usually a week, but may be less or more, depending on your condition. This is considered enough time to evaluate its effectiveness while you are both resting and active.
Once the trial period is over and PNS is deemed successful at reducing pain by at least 50%, one of our doctors will perform the permanent implantation. The device is approximately the size of a watch face, which is implanted during a minimally invasive procedure. It is placed under the skin (often in the chest, abdomen or buttock area).
Peripheral nerve stimulation can be an excellent treatment option when other pain-relieving therapies have failed. You may be a candidate for PNS if you:
PNS is performed with conscious sedation, a type of controlled anesthesia, in which you are awake during the procedure but relaxed and comfortable. Once the procedure is finished, you can return home after a short observation period.
With PNS therapy, there are different devices that can be used, depending on your unique condition, symptoms and area where you are experiencing pain:
Powered by an internal batter, the stimulator emits mild electrical impulses. Over time, the battery will need to be replaced (approximately every 3-5 years).
With this option, no battery is implanted with the devices. You use an external wearable transmitter that powers the device wirelessly.
At Pro Spine & Pain, our board-certified pain management specialists are among the most qualified experts in Wisconsin. Before suggesting PNS, they will use a collaborated approach with you that includes discussing your symptoms, reviewing your medical history and more. If needed, they will refer you for advanced diagnostic imaging to ensure that you qualify for a PNS device.
After the anesthesia has worn off, you will be discharged and may return home the same day.
The incision should take around 2-4 weeks to heal, and you’ll be provided detailed close instructions to follow, such as:
